5 Marketing Mistakes That Make Spiritual Entrepreneurs Feel Icky (And What to Do Instead)

These are the top five mistakes wellness and spiritual business owners often make

For YEARS, I made every spiritual marketing mistake in this post. I hid my Crystal Reiki practice, undercharged for my services, and tried to sound like every other ‘professional’ marketer out there. I felt icky, inauthentic, and constantly burned out. If you are like me, it’s only a matter of time before these mistakes catch up with you.

If you’re a spiritual  or wellness entrepreneur who feels gross every time you try to promote your beautiful work, this post is for you. You’re not broken, and you don’t need to become someone else to succeed online. You just need to stop making these 5 mistakes that go against your spiritual nature and stop listening to the “marketing bros” online, cause that advice does not align with us.

Mistake #1: Using Aggressive Sales Language

You know those websites that claim “buy now or miss out forever” or “limited time only!” or even worse, those annoying counters that claim you have one hour to claim their deal. Those are fear based urgency tactics, and spiritual work is the farthest thing from fear based as you want to get.

Not only do these fear based tactics go against the abundance mindset most spiritual and wellness business want to flow with, but it makes you feel like a used car salesman or someone working on commissions who hasn’t hit their quota at the end of the month.

These types of tactics don’t attract your soul clients but instead push them away. You aren’t exuding that healing energy you want to share, but instead you are creating scarcity where there should be flow and abundance.

What to do instead

Use invitation language

  • “If this resonates with you…”.
  • “Does this feel like divine timing? Let’s chat”
  • “Ready to explore how we can work together?”
  • “Feeling called to dive deeper?”

Invite them in like you would a friend into your home (after all, your website is your home). Inviting them in without scaring them that you are going to shut the door in their face or that you are going to run out of seats inside.

Share your availability without pressure

Don’t include those cheesy countdown timers or create a sense of scarcity, because get what is going to come your way? Scarcity! If you are able to hold space for only a limited number of clients, just say that. Consider these:

  • “I have a few scared spots opening up in [month]- if one is calling your name, sign up here”
  • “Space is opening up for new clients. If the timing feels right, reach out”
  • “Curious if we’re a good fit? Let’s have a no-pressure conversation”
  • “My calendar has room for 3 heart-centered entrepreneurs this month. Is one of those spots yours?

Mistake #2: Copying Corporate Marketing Templates

I know as a small business owner we are all guilty of this. We are so used to doing things ourselves, learning, wanting to grow our business and share our gifts, that we end up listening to so much information (and let’s be honest, misinformation) that we lose sight of what does and doesn’t apply to us. We lose our inner voice!

Those marketing templates that ‘worked for XYZ corporate brand’? They fall flat for spiritual businesses. When you try to squeeze your healing work into corporate formulas, your content ends up feeling disconnected from who you actually are. And let’s be real – explaining energy work using a template designed to sell software just doesn’t work.

Here is a secret, your clients can sense inauthenticity immediately and when I look at your website, so can I. You lose your unique voice and gifts in templates that are designed for products for the masses and not transformation.

What to do instead

  • Write like you are talking to a friend. Your voice, your tone and your passion cannot be replicated. Use this to stand out.
  • Share your process, your philosophy. What makes you unique in this healing space
  • Use words that align with your energy. Don’t force phrases or Call to Actions (CTA’s) because someone said it will increase clicks.
  • Create templates and processes that match YOUR spiritual values.

Mistake #3 Competing Instead of Collaborating

I’ve been in the spiritual space long enough to see smaller creators grow big and bigLavender stems with flowers, salve and oils on wooden table. These are 5 mistakes spiritual businesses and wellness practitioners make in their marketing efforts. creators become so problematic in the space that they are no longer in business. Spirituality and wellness is not a competition. Seeing other practitioners as competition or hoarding opportunities or clients, you are creating a scarcity mindset all on your own.

Trying to put down other businesses or practitioners not only makes you look bad, but it will come back around to you. The wellness community thrives on collaboration. Your ideal client wants to see you supporting others, it makes them feel that they will also be supported and you have their best interest at heart.

What to do instead

  • Right now, on your social media, share a practitioner or wellness center you love. They don’t have to do the same thing you do, but maybe it’s a modality you don’t have experience with or they share insightful posts. When we give love, we always get it back.
  • Even in traditional businesses, many thrive from word of mouth from other businesses, this is something wellness practitioners should absolutely replicate. If you think your client can benefit from a session with another space make that connection.

Example: “I absolutely love how [other practitioner] approaches crystal healing. If you’re looking for in-person sessions in [city], she’s amazing. For [your healing modality] I got you!”

Trust that there’s abundance for everyone.

Mistake #4 Underpricing + Overgiving

I am absolutely guilty of this one! Raise your hand if you are charging way less than your transformation is worth? This is absolutely a form of self-sabotage.  You are undervaluing your gifts, your time and your worth by charging less than what you deserve.

Underpricing and overgiving in spiritual and wellness spaces can also look like:

  • Throwing in “just one more thing” for free
  • Feeling guilty about asking for money for spiritual work
  • Giving away your best advice for free constantly
  • Giving away more time that originally paid for. For example, they book for an hour and it ends up being an hour and 15 minutes.

This mistake only end up attracting the wrong people that don’t value your work. You are no longer booking clients who appreciate your talents, but instead start booking you because you are the cheapest.

Overgiving also ends up leading to resentment and burnout. You no longer feel called to do this amazing work because you feel clients are taking advantage or there is no longer and equal energy exchange. And when it comes down to it, you can’t serve from an empty cup.

The spiritual entrepreneur trap: We think charging well means we’re not spiritual enough. WRONG. Your gifts are sacred – they deserve sacred compensation. The right clients WANT to pay you well because they understand transformation has value.

What to do instead

  • Price based on transformation, not time. It has taken you years to learn what you know, you should be compensated accordingly
  • Set clear boundaries around what’s included
  • Remember: money flows when you honor your worth
  • Your pricing should feel slightly scary (that’s growth!)

Reframe: Instead of: “I feel bad charging for spiritual work” Try: “I honor the sacred exchange of energy by pricing my gifts appropriately”

Mistake #5: Ignoring  Basic Digital Foundations

So just because we don’t fit into corporate templates or use tech jargon, does not mean we are allowed to skip on the digital basics. This includes:

There are so many wellness entrepreneurs that have the most beautiful Instagram pages but absolutely terrible websites. They rely on social media algorithms instead of owning there own audience. What does “owning your own audience” mean? It means that if your social media page goes down tomorrow (which happens A LOT), where is your audience? Where can they find you online? How can you reach them?

To add, if you don’t have a clear booking system, you can’t take payment online, you don’t have a space where clients can message you outside of a DM, you are missing out on business. You are literally making it hard for people to give you money!

What to do instead

This is exactly why I help wellness entrepreneurs create digital foundations that work. Your Instagram is beautiful, but what happens when the algorithm changes?
